Intergenerational Associations and the Fertility Transition

چکیده

Fertility change is distinct from other forms of social and economic change because it directly alters the size and composition of the next generation. This paper studies how changes in population composition over the fertility transition feed back into the path of average fertility across generations. Consistent with a quality-quantity model drawn from theories of long-run growth and the demographic transition, microdata from 40 developing countries show that intergenerational fertility associations are weak at the start of the fertility transition and then strengthen as it progresses, due to the alignment of the skill-fertility relationship across generations. As fertility approaches the replacement level, this strengthening reweights the population to raise aggregate fertility rates, pushing back against aggregate fertility decline. ∗E-mail: [email protected]. Correlations in fertility across generations: can low fertility persist?

Correlations in family size across generations could have a major influence on human population size in the future. Empirical studies have shown that the associations between the fertility of parents and the fertility of children are substantial and growing over time. Despite their potential long-term consequences, intergenerational fertility correlations have largely been ignored by researcher...

Intergenerational Transfers and Demographic Transition

This paper presents an analysis of demographic transition based on the endogenous evolution of intergenerational transfers along an economy’s endogenous path of development. Two-period-lived agents belonging to overlapping generations choose optimally their desired levels of consumption and fertility, together with their desired sizes of transfers to both parents and children. Parents are more ...

Family influence in fertility: A longitudinal analysis of sibling correlations in first birth risk and completed fertility among Swedish men and women

BACKGROUND The intergenerational transmission of fertility has received much attention in demography. This has been done by estimating the correlation between parents’ and offsprings’ fertility. An alternative method that provides a more comprehensive account of the role of family background sibling correlations has not been used before. OBJECTIVE I estimate the overall importance of family bac...

The intergenerational transmission of fertility in contemporary Denmark: the effects of number of siblings (full and half), birth order, and whether male or female.

Using the Danish Fertility Database, we investigate intergenerational fertility transmission, including the relationship between the number of children born to those aged 25 and 26 years in 1994 and the number of their full sibs and half-sibs. We find that the fertility behaviour of parents and their children is positively correlated, and that half-sibs and full sibs have broadly similar effect...

Differential fertility and intergenerational mobility under private versus public education

We study differential fertility and intergenerational mobility in an overlapping-generations framework with skilled and unskilled individuals. Assuming unskilled parents are less productive in educating children, we show that they choose higher fertility but less investment for child education than skilled parents. Public education reduces the fertility gap but may increase intergenerational mo...
